I Am: A Celebration of Identity
"I'm beautiful, I'm tall, I have big feet and I'm mixed," writes 10-year-old Sionell, one of the 19 artists featured in this book. The children who participated in the "I Am" project came from Crestview Elementary School, dubbed the "little U.N. of Henrico County Schools" for its ethnic diversity.
The focus of Project Crestview was on identity, as we guided the young artists in using different art forms to look at their similarities and differences. "I Am" is a documentation of this project, as well as a celebration of the creativity expressed by these children. The book could inspire similar projects for teachers, parents, and volunteers.
Four Richmond artists worked with 10- and 11-year-olds to explore their identities through painting, photography, writing, and Super 8 filmmaking. The book features a full-color spread on each young artist.
